Why does my new memory foam pillow smell?

If a new memory foam pillow has a faint chemical scent out of the box, you are noticing off-gassing — a normal, temporary release of trapped production gases. With quality, certified foam it is minor and clears with airing. Here is what is actually happening and how to handle it.

What off-gassing actually is

Memory foam is made by reacting polyols and isocyanates into a polyurethane foam. Tiny amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) remain in the cell structure, and the pillow is then vacuum-compressed and sealed for shipping. When you open it, those trapped gases disperse into the air — that is the "new foam" smell. It is the same reason a new car or fresh paint has a scent.

Is it safe?

For foam made with tier-1 raw materials and certified low-VOC, the faint initial scent is not considered harmful for most people, and it fades. The honest caveat: cheap, poorly cured foam can smell stronger and longer. That is why certification matters — a CertiPUR-US certified foam is tested for low VOC emissions and made without certain harmful substances, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers the cover fabric's safety. People who are pregnant, sensitive, or simply cautious should choose certified low-odor foam and air it before first use.

A faint, fading scent is normal foam chemistry. A strong, lasting chemical smell is a quality signal — not something to ignore.

How long it lasts and how to clear it fast

• Unwrap and lay the pillow flat in a ventilated, shaded room — most scent clears in a few hours to a few days.
• Add airflow with an open window or fan; warmth and circulation speed up dispersal.
• Optional: sprinkle baking soda on the foam for a few hours, then vacuum it off.
• Wash the removable cover before first use for a fresh start.

How a good factory keeps odor low

Odor control starts in production, not in your bedroom.
