How to clean and wash a memory foam pillow.

A memory foam pillow is not like a regular fiber pillow — the single most important rule is that the foam core must never go in a washing machine. Below is the safe routine our factory recommends to buyers and end users, split into the washable cover and the foam core.

Why you can't machine-wash the foam core

Memory foam is an open-cell viscoelastic structure. A washing machine's agitation tears those cells, and the foam soaks up water like a sponge — it stays wet for days, loses its rebound and support, and can grow mold inside. This is why every reputable manufacturer designs a removable, washable outer cover: the cover takes the laundry, the core stays dry.

Step 1 — Wash the removable cover

• Unzip and remove the cover. Check the care label first.
• Machine-wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent; skip fabric softener, which clogs cooling fibers like ice-silk.
• Air-dry or tumble-dry on low. Re-fit the cover only when fully dry.

Step 2 — Spot-clean the foam core

For stains, mix a little mild soap with water, dab the spot with a damp cloth, then blot with a clean damp cloth to rinse. Press — never wring or twist — and absorb moisture with a dry towel. Treat only the affected area, not the whole pillow.

Step 3 — Deodorize

To freshen the foam, sift a thin layer of baking soda over the surface, leave it 2–4 hours to absorb odors and moisture, then vacuum it off with an upholstery attachment. This is also the safe way to handle any faint new-foam scent.

Step 4 — Dry it completely

Lay the foam flat in a shaded, well-ventilated place — not in direct sun or a hot dryer, both of which break down the foam. Make sure it is bone-dry before re-covering; trapped moisture is what causes odor and mildew.

How often, and how to keep it cleaner for longer

• Wash the cover every 2–3 weeks; air the core monthly; deep-deodorize every 2–3 months.
• Always use a pillowcase — it takes the sweat and oils so the foam stays clean.
• A removable, washable cover is a product design choice — worth confirming before you buy or source.
